Rear Admiral Halert C. Shepheard Awards

Shortly after his death in 1975, the Board of Directors of the Chamber of Shipping of America established the Rear Admiral Halert C. Shepheard Award to recognize an individual for exceptional achievement toward merchant marine safety, the area to which RADM Shepheard (Shep) contributed greatly throughout his long and distinguished professional life. Shep was the head of the Bureau of Marine Inspection and Navigation when it was made part of the U.S. Coast Guard. He held the rank of Rear Admiral, USCG and was the chief representative of the United States to the conference that wrote the Safety of Life At Sea convention in 1948.

This year, the Board has expanded the areas to be considered and have included environmental protection as a singular issue that may be noted in a nomination; thus, nominations will be considered for any person meeting the requirements noted below in maritime safety (including security), health or marine environmental protection.

The Chamber of Shipping of America kindly invites nominations from the maritime industry for the annual SHEP Award. Additionally, the Board has requested several heads of international organizations and maritime schools to act as an informal nominating panel. Nominations for a living individual may be submitted for a single outstanding contribution to merchant marine safety (including security), health or environmental protection; or in recognition of, dedication to, or exceptional leadership in activities associated with merchant marine safety (security), environmental protection or health over a period of time.

Nominees may include individuals who are eminent in their marine field of endeavor such as, but not limited to: ship owners, ship operators, naval architects, marine engineers, shipbuilders and those affiliated with ship operations, governments, and marine associations. As the purpose of the "Shep" Award is to encourage and inspire merchant marine safety, health and environmental protection, it is intended that younger individuals should also be given consideration. Nominations should be based upon direct personal and professional knowledge of an individual.

Please note that the Award Committee of the Chamber of Shipping of America can only act on nominations received. In a given year the Committee may not bestow an award if it does not consider any of the nominations of sufficient merit.

The nominee and nominator should not be directly affiliated with the same organization. The recipient will be presented with a Steuben Crystal Achievement Award.
